History of shady lane

Shady Lane School is an inclusive early care and education program for children ages six weeks to five years of age. Our mission is to address the full range of barriers to participation—not just race and poverty, but differences in culture, religion, physical and cognitive ability, family composition, and language, among others.

Shady Lane School’s effort to create a diverse student and staff population reflects our founders’ concern with historical barriers (such as race and poverty) that limit access to a high-quality education. Today, Shady Lane takes a more complex and holistic approach to diversity. Our community seeks to address the full range of barriers to participation—not just race and poverty, but differences in culture, religion, physical and cognitive ability, family composition, and language, among others.

Founded in 1966, our school holds roots to local legends Phil Hallen and Fred Rogers as well as many leading contemporaries in the Pittsburgh community, philanthropy, and early childhood space.
